Root Islamic Education

Introduction to the Italian edition as yet unpublished

This series of talks by Shaykh Abdalqadir as-Sufi was the turning point for the Deen of Islam in our time. A bold statement, but none the less not without merit. It is based upon the observation of the decline of sovereign Islam under the Ottomans and its final dissolution with the fall of the last great Sultan and Khalif of the Muslims, Abdul Hamid Khan II, breaking up the unified Ummah of Sayyidina Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallim, into separate nation states operating under kafir international law. A loss of sovereignty of Book and Sunnah and identity as a single nation, led by a man of authority, a Khalif, subservient only to the Qur’an and the example of the Prophet Muhammad, sallallahu alayhi wa sallim, as embodied by the men of knowledge, responsible for judgements and decisions upon which a ruler can act.

There have been many efforts to hybridise Islam within this global pattern of usury capitalism by such groups as the Modernists, Muslim Brotherhood, et al, as the new phenomenon of Islam as terrorism had not yet been created by the current dominant socie. All these only led to the obscuring of Islam as the only clarification of man’s existence and purpose on this planet in this time and any yet to come.

Shaykh Dr. Abdalqadir as-Sufi states in the beginning of the preface to the publication of these talks, sweeping aside all these erroneous efforts to include Islam within the modern atheist, usurious world:

Islam is not and can never be, by definition, in crisis or need of revisionist change. Islam, Kitab wa Sunna, is immutable in all places until the end of time. It is itself a critique and balance-principle against which all human ventures must be measured and themselves revised and changed.

The Du’a of Reconciliation

Abdullah ibn Mas’ood, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Prophet ﷺ would teach his Companions the supplication recited after the tashahhud together with the tashahhud itself, in the same careful and deliberate manner. This is the Du’a of Reconciliation.

The transmission of the noble companion Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, may Allah be pleased with him, conveys a strong recommendation from the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ  to learn this supplication. This infers the importance and the great benefit of understanding and embodying the meanings of the du’a.

Oh Allah! put harmony between our hearts,

In other words, make that there are feelings of affection, trust and sincere respect between us from which we will experience unity, solace and encouragement in the trials of life

Bring reconciliation between us

And, if there have been episodes of misunderstanding, hurting of feelings, or enemies sowing discord between us, both from among people or from the machinations of the mind or the whisperings of the shayatin, we ask Allah to eliminate those causes of separation and restore good faith, respect and trust between us

Guide us on the paths of peace and safety

In the choices of our thoughts and intentions and in the course of our own actions, guide us on paths of safety, with remembrance and not with negligence, with knowledge and not with ignorance, with wisdom and not obeying our lower passions, in good sound and noble company and not in company that causes confusion and awakens bad ideas and wrong beliefs

Recue us from darkness into light

In all matters of our relations, in our family, among the ones we love, rescue us from the dangerous territories of suspicion, frustration, despair and mistrust -which are darkness- and take us to spaces of gentleness, adab, generosity, indulgence with the faults and slips of others and to good actions -which are light.

And save us from indecent acts, the visible ones and the hidden ones

The supplication now turns to our own safety by asking Allah to shield us from ugly indecent actions, words and thoughts, both public and secret. The word al-fawahish, refers mostly to indecorous behaviour and speech, related to sexual matters.

Bless us in our hearing, our sight, our hearts, our spouses, our descendants

And after that, we ask Allah to bless us in how we use our precious faculties of seeing, hearing and the contents of our hearts (beliefs, intentions and thoughts) and Allah’s blessing us here means to keep them free from haram and evil, bless our spouses, so that they are a source of safety, support and good advice to us and bless our children and grandchildren, so that they are a cause of joy, tranquility and assistance when we need it and not a source of shame, trouble, anxieties and concerns.

And turn to us in forgiveness, Truly You are the ever turning to His slaves in forgiveness, Compassionate.

While we hope from Allah His assistance in all the matters mentioned above, we acknowledge our own mistakes, forgetfulness, wrongdoing, inclinations to the contrary of what has been mentioned, and we beseech Him to forgive us.

Make us thankful for your blessings

We ask Allah to imbed gratitude in our hearts for the blessings of life, the good moments, the provision and the light of guidance, the love and the support of those who love us and the innumerable blessings of day and night. Gratitude is the healing of all dark ideas and feelings and the key for those blessings to increase, as promised in the Qur’an.

Expressing our gratitude by praising You

Gratitude might be only an internal state of recognition of the goodness and acknowledgement of the kindness of the Giver, but the Prophet, ﷺ teaches us to seek verbal expression of the gratitude by speaking well of Allah, as also repeated in the Qur’an. “And as for the blessings and gifts of your Lord, speak out.”

Accepting Your gifts. And complete them for us.

It might be that we are blessed with gifts in life and we do not see them, we do not recognize them, we think little of them and we do not accept them. If that is the case, we are likely to lose them. So, we ask Allah that He grants us acceptance of His gifts and that He, glory be to him, increases and perfects those gifts to us, the material ones like provision, resources, as well as the immaterial ones like health and harmonious relations, brotherhood with the believers and successful accomplishment of all good actions.
